This special Joint Annual Symposium of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) and the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS) will also incorporate the 6th International Conference on Space Structures usually held at Surrey University.

The Annual Meetings of the Associations will also be held in conjunction with the Symposium.

Theme and Topics

The Symposium title is "Taller, Longer, Lighter", with the added theme of "Meeting Growing Demand with Limited Resources" to reflect the sustainability challenge referred to in the introduction. This main theme is supplemented by the following topics:

• Concepts and planning
• Design and construction
• Analysis and methods
• Materials and durability
• Saving energy and extending life
• Operation and maintenance
• Instrumentation and monitoring

Papers will be allocated to one of the above topics.
